The Ongoing Journey of Awakening

A significant spiritual awakening might appear as a definitive turning point in one's life; however, my journey, profoundly influenced by the wisdom of my esteemed teacher, Frau Doktor Luerssen, has illuminated the misleading nature of this belief. Her extraordinary intellect is complemented by her deep compassion and unwavering moral integrity. Over the years, I have come to understand that spiritual awakenings are not singular events but rather a continuum of experiences that involve an experiencer — the individual navigating what is often glamorized as enlightenment, adorned with various exalted labels. These occurrences, in my perspective, signify just a transient phase within a broader continuum, a never-ending evolution that demands both, introspection and active engagement.

This ongoing quest requires us to recognize and confront the concealed facets of ourselves that often remain shrouded in ignorance. The profound insights of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung aptly describe what he referred to as 'The Gap of Integration' following an awakening. The stark reality that surfaces after such an awakening is that, despite acquiring new insights, entrenched habits and deeply ingrained patterns continue to linger. Jung articulated this process as a crucial psychological crisis wherein outdated, unhealthy ego identities must dissolve, and the unconscious shadow material must be confronted and integrated. His observations resonate powerfully with the two or three decades that often unfold after an awakening. He noted that many individuals struggle to navigate the tumultuous waters of spiritual awakening, asserting, “People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” Personally, I find deep resonance with Jung's maxim, "There is no birth of consciousness without pain."

Jung emphasized that the true challenge lies not in the awakening itself, but in the raw, unvarnished truths it reveals — truths that can dismantle the carefully constructed identities we have cultivated over our lives. In this vulnerable state, many retreat into the comfort of familiar illusions, seeking refuge in the dreamlike narratives they once cherished. The reality of enlightenment is often obscured by romanticized portrayals that neglect the profound discomfort accompanying such a transformation. It is a journey marked by a haunting silence, a psychic upheaval, and a soul-stirring tremor that can leave one feeling unmoored. This unspoken reality of awakening entails dismantling illusions, releasing beloved stories, and shedding the masks that have become indistinguishable from our very essence. Though this process may be fraught with pain, it ultimately leads to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our interconnectedness with all living beings.

I am profoundly grateful for all who have accompanied and those who still do on this path, each contributing their unique perspectives. They have reminded me that the core of this practice resides in the ongoing return to mindfulness, compassion, and non-attachment, transcending the confines of the meditation cushion. It is through this continuous engagement that we can illuminate the areas of our psyche that remain unconscious, nurturing a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.

"So, that’s why non-duality is so challenging. True non-duality— which means that freedom has to be right here while totally committed to other beings and totally connected with them. There’s no freedom apart from that. That’s a delusion. That’s a relative state of temporary freedom. But, the full, final freedom has to embrace all of the beings or it’s not the genuine one."
