Transpersonal psychotherapy addresses the reasons why individuals unconsciously live in fear, feel disconnected and struggle to express their emotions naturally. The English child psychiatrist W. D. Winnicott's concept of the "false self" sheds light on these conditions of emotional numbness. Winnicott explained that other people's expectations can become so important that they overshadow one's true self, the self connected to the core of one's being. He warned that through this false self, a person can create artificial relationships and even appear real, while actually hiding an emptiness behind a facade.
Transpersonal psychotherapy emphasizes the importance of inner work in achieving authentic consciousness, an area often met with resistance. Freud initially identified this as "tenacious resistance," observing its intensification with deeper analysis. People are often hesitant to explore their unconscious, especially to confront their shadow self—the parts of themselves they have rejected or don't recognize. As people delve deeper into their psyche, the ego's defence mechanisms, such as projection, rationalization and denial, tend to become stronger. These mechanisms act as unconscious ways to protect against anxiety, conflict and the emergence of unacceptable impulses or perceived threats.
I've learned that achieving true wholeness requires a brave exploration of these hidden areas, going beyond superficial or idealized self-images. Authentic spiritual growth depends on bringing these unseen and unacknowledged elements within us to light and integrating them. This process leads to a transformative journey of self-discovery and integration, where the shadow is not feared but understood as an essential part of the whole self. In transpersonal work, the goal is not to get rid of the ego but to go beyond its limitations, allowing for a more expansive and genuine experience of being. This involves acknowledging and working through ego defences to reach deeper levels of awareness and, ultimately, to realize a more profound connection to oneself and the world.
